Nozomi #660: Nozomi the Teacher
Emma
Hmm…
Nozomi
What are you doing, Emma?
Emma
My homework. I'm supposed to write a haiku and hand it in.
Emma
But it's so hard to follow the format. I don't know how to come up with a good one.
Nozomi
That's true. Haiku have a certain way with words you don't usually use.
Emma
Can you give me an example?
Nozomi
Hmm. For example… “At the ancient pond—A frog jumped in from the shore—The splash of water.”
Emma
Ancient pond?
Nozomi
Yeah. It's a famous haiku.
Nozomi
“The ancient pond” makes you think of a still pond where there's not even a single sound.
Nozomi
And then in jumps a single frog. It makes a splash and then the area falls silent again.
Nozomi
The haiku makes you imagine a quiet space and the impression it would leave on us.
Emma
A space? And the impression it leaves?
Nozomi
There are things that you can feel with your heart and not see with your eyes. That's what haiku is all about… It's a bit difficult, huh?
Emma
But thanks to you, Nozomi, I think I was kind of able to get a better idea of it. I'm going to try and come up with a haiku right away.
Emma
Nijigasaki—Cherry blossom petals dance—On the way to school.
Nozomi
Wow! That's wonderful.
Emma
*Giggle* I tried to express how fun of a space Nijigasaki is.
Nozomi
It's perfect! I could almost see it right before my eyes. I should have known you'd understand it quickly Emma!
Emma
No way. It's because you were a good teacher and the way you explained it was so easy to understand.
Nozomi
*Giggle* You make me blush when you say it like that.
