Ch. 49 Ep. 2: Ai's Musical Experience!
Ai's here to try the music department, and while she looks nervous, that clearly won't stop her excitement. How will the program turn out?
Ai
Hiya! Wassup?
Player
Hi, Ai, welcome to music! This is your last one, right? Then you'll have tried out all the departments.
Ai
Yeah! What do you guys do in music anyway? I can't wait to find out.
Player
We're doing composition today.
Ai
Whoa! I'm getting thrown into composition right off the bat?!
Player
Don't worry, you'll be fine. I'll be here to help you out…Hmm? Actually, you don't seem that worried.
Ai
Yeah, I can't WAIT to get started! I'm so excited!
[Fade in/out.]
Music Teacher
All right, what you've just heard is called the Pachelbel's Canon chord progression. You can probably think of plenty of examples of hearing this in other songs.
Music Teacher
Now let's hear what's called the royal road progression.
Ai
Wow. I always thought every melody was different, but now I know how to categorize them.
Player
Uh-huh. Chord progressions are just the tip of the iceberg, too. But generally speaking, you can say every piece of music has one chord progression or another.
Ai
Huh. It's a lot easier to hear when you group a bunch of songs with the same chord progression together like this.
Player
Want me to make it even easier for you?
Ai
Huh? How so?
Player
By thinking of our school idol songs!
Ai
Oh, great idea!
Ai
It's awesome that listening to our favorite songs still counts as learning!
Player
Right?
Music Teacher
Okay. Now, break into pairs and try making your own composition. The tone of a piece is determined by its chord progression. Choose whichever one works best for you.
Ai
Huh? Wait, no! I can't read sheet music!
Music Teacher
Guest students, keep the chord progression in mind and compose your piece by humming it. Sing along with a melody that makes you feel good.
Music Teacher
Students in the music department, you'll be responsible for writing down your partner's score and arranging it.
Player
Huh?!
Ai
Oh, if that's all I have to do, then I'm down for this 100%.
Ai
Time for us to work together!
Player
G-Good luck, us…
[Fade in/out.]
Ai
I did it! I composed my first-ever song! Man, I really dig this now.
Ayumu
Good for you!
Rina
I want to hear your song.
Player
We're not done arranging it yet…
Ai
Don't you think you're being too fussy about it?
Player
I want to give it my full attention. I mean, it's your first song after all!
Ayumu
This sounds so fun.
Ai
I wish you could have joined us. You had a quiz today instead, right?
Ayumu
Yeah… My mock exams are coming up, so I can't miss class now.
Ayumu
Ugh! I wish I could have tried a class in the music department too.
Player
I'm glad to hear you're so interested in it. Here, why don't I give you a lesson at home? The lesson we covered in the program was so simple even I could teach it.
Ayumu
Do you really mean it? I'd love to!
Ai
I bet you're gonna dig it too.
Rina
You're both really inquisitive.
Ai
You think? I feel like everyone here is.
Ai
I mean, we're all super curious about everything when it comes to school idols.
Ai
And we all have tons of stuff we want to look into or try for ourselves, y'know?
Rina
That's true.
Ayumu
Yeah, I agree.
Ai
See?
[Fade in/out. Taking out phone.]
Player
Hey, Ai? I finished the song!
Ai
You did? Really? Thanks so much! I can't wait to see how it turned out!
Player
I hope it lives up to what you were imagining…
Ai
Of course it will. After all, every other song you write for me always fits me to a T.
Ai
You know, doing this program made me admire you all the more.
Ai
And I feel like what I learned today in class was only the very basics of music. There's probably way, way more to it.
Ai
So considering that, I realized all over again how awesome you are for coming up with all the music that perfectly matches the feelings of every club member.
Ai
So I just want to say… Thanks.
Ai
Keep up the great work, okay? And you gotta teach me more about composition sometime!
