Ch. 3 Ep. 9: Numazu History

You feel relieved after Yoshiko's menu suggestions become a bit more normal. You help Ruby and Hanamaru with the Numazu tourism guide next. Hanamaru's vast knowledge really throws you for a spin.

Player

Excuse me. Hanamaru, Ruby, are you in here?

Hanamaru

Yeah, we're here, zura!

Player

Whoa! That's a lot of books. Researching something?

Hanamaru

Don't worry about it. Come on in.

Ruby

Hello. I had a lot of fun yesterday.

Player

Me too. Thanks for staying so late last night, you two. Did you get home okay? It was pitch black outside.

Ruby

I was fine. I had my sister with me.

Hanamaru

I made it back fine, zura. Thanks for asking.

Hanamaru

Hm? *Sniff* Smells like food!

Ruby

It does. What an alluring aroma.

Player

Actually, I was just helping Yoshiko and You with their festival prep.

Ruby

Oh yeah, weren't they coming up with food ideas for the festival?

Player

Yup. I thought it'd be a good idea to get someone else to try their food, so I brought some for you.

Hanamaru

You did? Score! Let's eat, zura!

Ruby

Oh, but…

Player

What's wrong?

Hanamaru

What?! Oh yeah, zura. We're not allowed to eat or drink in here.

Player

Oh, right. Sorry, I didn't realize.

Hanamaru

That's okay. Thanks for bringing it over. We'll eat it in a classroom later, zura.

Ruby

Did they decide what to make for the festival?

Player

Yeah, for the most part. Yakisoba, takoyaki, and frozen mikan, for the time being. I brought you guys some takoyaki.

Player

Yoshiko made it.

Ruby

Eeek!

Hanamaru

Don't tell me that super spicy takoyaki that set Ruby's mouth on fire has cursed us with its existence again, zura!

Player

Fire?! No no no, it's not that spicy. It was pretty bad at first, but she made adjustments.

Ruby

Are you sure? Nothing bad will happen if I eat it?

Player

It's fine. You and I already had some. There's nothing to worry about.

Hanamaru

Only a fallen angel could create a dish that makes you worry more about your own life than the taste of it, zura.

Player

Anyway, what are you two working on?

Ruby

We're writing the script for the tourism information broadcast. It's going to air the day of the Summer Festival.

Player

A tourist guide! Right, a lot of people from a lot of places will be coming. That's who you're making it for, right?

Ruby

Yes. We want everyone to know the best parts of Numazu.

Hanamaru

Ruby is going to read it for the broadcast.

Player

Is she? Cool. I can't wait to hear it.

Ruby

Oh… I'm not cool. Hanamaru wrote most of the script anyway.

Hanamaru

It's fun for me, so don't worry about it, zura. I'm writing it so that cute voice of yours can shine, Ruby!

Player

What's it all about?

Hanamaru

I thought it'd be a good idea to outline the history of Numazu so people can know what a great place this is, zura.

Player

History? That might be pretty interesting for first time visitors.

Hanamaru

Numazu has a long history. A lot of people think of Mt. Fuji when they hear Numazu, but you can't forget about Mt. Ashitaka, either zura!

Player

Is Mt. Ashitaka the mountain you can see right near Mt. Fuji?

Hanamaru

Correct, zura. In fact, people have been living in this area from about 50 thousand to 35 thousand years ago, from the middle to late Paleolithic age.

Hanamaru

84 ruins and over 300 remnants of villages believed to be of that time have been discovered around Mt. Ashitaka. That type of density is apparently rare.

Hanamaru

The geography used to be different, too. It was an ice age back then, so the sea level was lower, which means elevations were…

Ruby

Wah… Waaaah!!

Hanamaru

Zura?

Player

Hanamaru… Don't you think that's too much detail?

Hanamaru

You think so? I actually cut a bunch out after Ruby gave me some advice.

Ruby

Hanamaru, it needs to be more compact. At this rate, we won't finish telling the history of Numazu before the festival ends.

Player

As tourist information, wouldn't it be a good to introduce some famous spots or products?

Player

I think most people are interested in delicious food and beautiful scenery when they go to new places.

Hanamaru

I see! Food is the first thing I think of when traveling too, zura!

Player

Delicious food in Numazu… That has to be seafood, right? The sashimi is good, and so is the fried food.

Hanamaru

Yes, sashimi and fried food. We even have deep sea fish on the menu, zura!

Player

I heard the mikans here were good, too. Chika was pushing them on me when I was at her ryokan. Yoshiko doesn't seem to like them, though.

Ruby

Yoshiko ate too many mikans, and now she hates them.

Player

Oh, so that's what happened.

Ruby

The mikan here are so sweet. There are even types of mikan which are grown here in Numazu!

Hanamaru

Now that I think about it, we have so much delicious food around us.

Player

You could include stuff about the ocean and Mt. Fuji, too. Seeing the size of Mt. Fuji and the sheer blue of the sea deeply moved me.

Hanamaru

Right! Thanks. Now I can write a good script for the tourist piece, zura!
