You Ep. 14: All Aboard the Hikawa Maru
Now that you and You have had your fill of Chinatown, your next destination is the large ship you saw from the Ferris wheel. Ship-fanatic You is in her element!
Player
Chinatown sure was fun.
You
It sure was! And the food was all so tasty… Meat buns, soup dumplings, sesame balls, ice cream… Yum!
Player
We got souvenirs for everyone, and we even bought a bamboo steamer. With one of these, we can turn any place into Chinatown.
You
I wanna test it out as soon as I get back! I have some frozen shumai at home.
Player
It'll be nice to have something extra to look forward to when you're back home! Where should we go now?
You
I wanna go over there! Remember the huge ship we saw from the Ferris wheel? We said we'd go see it afterward, right?
Player
Oh, you're right! C'mon, let's go.
[Fade in/out.]
Player
This is the ship we saw on the Ferris wheel, isn't it?
You
I knew it! It's the Hikawa Maru!
Player
Huh? You recognize it, You?
You
I thought it might be when we saw it on the Ferris wheel. I've only ever seen it in pictures online… Ahh, it's so, so, so amazing to see the real thing!
Player
This is actually my first time seeing a ship up this close, too.
You
It is? Do you not come to Yokohama very often?
Player
Not that often, no. On the times I did come here it was usually to shop around the city or take a quick peek at a theme park.
You
Then this is a perfect opportunity for you to fall in love with the Hikawa Maru, too! No, scratch that. With ALL ships!
Player
I guess it could be. I definitely want to learn more about the things you're into, You.
Player
But anyway, Hikawa Maru here is a really impressive vessel. I've seen ships sail around Odaiba, but this one really has it all. Hmm… Did it ferry travelers around?
You
Sure did, and cargo, too. The Hikawa Maru was used to move both people and property.
You
It was refurbished in 1930 and was repurposed as a hospital ship. Then it resumed being an ocean liner and carried all kinds of tourists and cargo until service ended in 1960.
You
It crossed the Pacific Ocean over 200 times! It's the pride of Japan, an ocean liner that's been designated an important cultural property!
Player
You're like a walking encyclopedia about it… I had no idea it was this amazing.
You
*Giggle* I've thought it was super cool ever since I first laid eyes on it. It's a ship I've always wanted to board.
You
The dining and guest rooms in the passenger quarters are meant to be super swanky!
Player
Huh, they had accommodation facilities too? I'm kind of intrigued by the swanky guest rooms…
Player
Wait a sec, I think those people are going inside the Hikawa Maru. Does that mean…?
You
Yeah, you can look inside! Which means… Hint, hint…
Player
*Giggle* Hint taken. We should go take a look!
You
Woohoo! C'mon, let's go! I wanna see the wheelhouse, the captain's quarters, the engine room!
Player
*Laugh* You would focus on those places before the fancy guest rooms.
You
Well, I AM gonna be a captain someday. All aboard the Hikawa Maru, now!
