Yoshiko Ep. 14: Complex Emotions

Things between Yoshiko and her mother have been awkward ever since her mom caught her in fallen angel mode. Yoshiko puts up a brave front, but you decide to help out when you see how sad she is.

Player

I was just kidding about gaining clairvoyance, you know.

Yoshiko

You were?!

Player

Your mom told me a little bit about it when she invited me inside.

Player

She said that you haven't spoken a word to her since she grilled you about what you do when you're cooped up in your room.

Yoshiko

Then she didn't tell you a little bit, she told you the whole thing.

Player

So… Your mom burst in on you while you were doing your fallen angel routine, and then you two ended up arguing when you tried to cover up what you were doing?

Yoshiko

Pretty much. I was delving into the dark secrets of the human world when I discovered some tantalizing data on devil-summoning. I was trying to verify those claims myself.

Player

Right, so you found a cool article while browsing the internet and tried it out. I'm getting a lot better at understanding Yohanese.

Yoshiko

It's not a language! Anyway, devil-summoning isn't the only thing off-limits to human eyes when it comes to black magic.

Yoshiko

So it was unacceptable that she entered my room that time. I even told her… I told her I'd be fine eating dinner alone later, but she didn't listen.

Player

So your mom came to call you to eat…

Player

I kind of understand how she must feel. Any mom would wonder what her daughter was up to when hiding away in her room, focusing on something so zealously.

Player

(But I feel for Yoshiko, too. This is a big argument that she can't talk to anyone about… Not because of black magic, but because she can't be honest with her own family.)

Yoshiko

I understand how she feels too, you know.

Yoshiko

If I thought that someone I lived with was harboring a great secret from me… I would worry, too, even if they weren't my real family.

Yoshiko

I think being able to open up to each other about your secrets and accept each other's differences is probably the best way to integrate into each other's lives.

Player

I guess so.

Yoshiko

But, you know! It's way easier said than done, right?! Imagine if she told me to stop doing my rites, or…

Player

Are you afraid she will, Mistress Yohane?

Yoshiko

Why would I ever—not…be afraid of that outcome?

Player

So which is it, are you afraid or not? I get it, though. It takes a lot of courage to show someone your true self, whether you're a human or a fallen angel.

Player

You worry about things turning out badly, then hide because you're scared of that, and then the gap between you and the other person gets even bigger.

Yoshiko

That's all true. The worst part is, well, I'm Yohane, the so-called child of misfortune. How can I expect things to turn out well?

Player

Do people really call you that? I do know you're pretty unlucky.

Player

But listen, Mistress Yohane… You'll never know how things might turn out if you don't try. You should go make up with your mom. I'll help you find a way!

Yoshiko

Did you listen to a word I said?! I, Yohane, am the daughter of disaster, the mistress of mishap! I could get thrown out of the house if things go sour!

Player

But your mom is a really strong human. She's managed to be family to you, the mistress of mishap, the fallen angel Yohane, even if she is only temporarily your mom!

Player

You said yourself that she's a force to be reckoned with. I think things will go way better than you'd expect.

Yoshiko

You must be awfully self-assured to come out with all of that.

Player

Believing you can do it is the first step towards success. Anyway, it's not myself I'm confident in! It's your relationship with your mom!
