Emma #185: A Happy Ending for Everyone

Player

What are you up to, Emma?

Emma

I'm reading this book I borrowed from the library.

Player

From the library? Oh, it's a Japanese book.

Emma

Yup. It's a book of fairy tales written in Japanese. Long novels are still too hard for me, but even I can read fairy tales.

Emma

I want to read lots of books and learn even more Japanese words.

Player

You're so studious, Emma. Your Japanese is already really good, but you're still striving to improve.

Emma

*Giggle* Thank you. Oh, I should look for a new book to read. I'm almost done with this one.

Player

Have you decided what story you're going to read next?

Emma

Hmm, I'm not sure. I read Cinderella and Snow White and Town Musicians of Bremen already…

Player

Wow, you've read a lot. Oh, how about Little Red Riding Hood? Did you read that one yet?

Emma

Little Red Riding Hood? No, I haven't actually read that one yet. I'll go with that!

Player

*Giggle* Emma reading Little Red Riding Hood, huh? I feel like that's a good match. Little Red Riding Hood and Emma.

Emma

How so?

Player

Well, I can easily picture you wearing a red hood and carrying a basket and trudging through the woods.

Emma

Does that mean you think I'd look good dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood? I'm not so sure.

Player

You definitely would! I think the red clothing would really suit your hair color and your pretty skin.

Emma

Eep, you're embarrassing me. *Giggle* That makes me happy, though. Thank you!

Option 1: “I think you'd probably eat the bread.”

Player

I feel like you'd get hungry on your way over and end up eating the bread you're bringing.

Emma

Whaaat?! I'd never eat someone's get-well gift. I'd make sure to eat a lot at home before leaving so that I wouldn't get hungry!

Option 2: “I think you'd probably get distracted.”

Player

I feel like you'd probably get distracted and make a lot of stops on the way over. Even without the wolf getting in the way.

Emma

I wouldn't do that if my grandma was waiting for me. I'd just make all those stops on the way back home.

Player

Ohhh, so that's your plan. Oh, but Little Red Riding Hood gets tricked by the wolf and eaten, right? I don't want you to get eaten.

Emma

Don't worry. If I was Little Red Riding Hood and met a wolf on my way to Grandma's, I would befriend it and the two of us would happily visit her together.

Player

Grandma would have a heart attack if you suddenly showed up with a wolf, Emma. But it's so like you to go with that instead of getting a hunter to shoot the wolf.

Emma

Well, the wolf probably only eats Little Red Riding Hood and her grandma because he's hungry, right?

Emma

If we became friends and ate some food together, the wolf wouldn't eat me or my grandma, and nobody would have to hurt him.

Emma

Everything would end happily ever after.

Player

I see. I suppose being hungry does tend to put people in a bad mood. Maybe that's what was going on with the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood.

Player

If you had written Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf would probably be a kind-hearted character.

Emma

*Giggle* And it'd have a happy ending where everyone ends up with a full belly. I'd love to read that version of the story.
