Eli #534: Somewhere Closer Than the Moon
Player
*Yawn*
Eli
Getting sleepy?
Player
Whoa! S-Sorry, Eli! I know that I should be more excited about coming to the planetarium with you…
Eli
*Giggle* I get it. Lying back in the dark like this can really make you doze off.
Player
But what about you, Eli? Doesn't it affect you?
Eli
Nope, I don't feel particularly sleepy.
Player
That's not what I meant. Don't you…have trouble with dark places like this?
Eli
Oh, that? Thanks for worrying about me, but I'm fine. I mean…
Player
Whoa, there's the moon! It's amazing how it just lit up so quickly like that.
Eli
With the big, bright moon right in front of me like this, any feelings of fear just drift away!
Player
It's the same with a real full moon. It's so bright that you don't even need a flashlight.
Player
“The moon is about 350,000 to 400,000 kilometers away from the Earth.” Wow, that's so far! I have no idea what could be out there 350,000 kilometers from here, even on Earth!
Eli
They say the Earth's circumference is about 40,000 kilometers, so if we went around the world eight-and-a-half to ten times, it'd be the same as the distance to the moon.
Option 1: “Actually, that sounds like it could be close?” |
---|
Player Eight times… When the number is a single digit like that, it feels closer. Eli I-I'm not so sure about that… But I guess our perception of things does change based on the words that we use. |
Option 2: “That's such a tremendous distance.” |
Player Eight-and-a-half trips around the Earth… Such a tremendous distance… Eli Even so, it's much closer than any other celestial body, right? |
Player
Look, Eli! “There are many theories on the moon's origin. Some say it split off from Earth or was created alongside it, or that it formed when something crashed into Earth.”
Player
Wow, I never knew that. Which theory do you think is correct, Eli?
Eli
Hmm, I wonder… There's still so much that we don't know about space, after all.
Eli
But I'm certain that the moon has been by Earth's side for a long, long time. Maybe even since the formation of Earth itself.
Eli
Ever since then, it has been gently illuminating and watching over this blue planet of ours from out there in the vastness of space…
Player
…Good. That means Earth wasn't alone, even in the pitch black of space. It must've felt so lonely when it was just formed.
Eli
The moon must have given the Earth courage… The courage to live on for billions of years.
Eli
…I feel the same way.
Player
What do you mean?
Eli
With you around, I don't feel scared. No matter how dark it gets.
Eli
It gives me endless courage just knowing that you and I are under the same night sky, illuminated by the very same moon.
Eli
Ever since I first met you, you've had a special place in my heart. You are the moon to my Earth. It's like you've been with me since birth.
Eli
Will you keep illuminating me from here on out?
Player
If I have a place in your heart, you know you don't even need to ask me that question, right?
Eli
It's okay if I do though, isn't it? The version of you that's in my heart isn't much of a talker, you see.
Player
*Laugh*
Player
Yes, I will illuminate you. If you're really okay with the light that I give off, that is.
Eli
Thank you… It feels like my heart has gotten brighter already.
Player
I'll do everything in my power to light up the streets at night so that you won't cry.
Eli
What?! I've never cried like that before!
